I’ve been reading a lot about Scratch on BloggingExperiment.com and other sites. It’s popping up all over. Every site has something to say about Scratchback. So I thought I’d give it a try.

A little background for you. Scratchback is promoted as a tip jar for bloggers. It comes in the form of a little widget – in my case a little orange box on the far right side bar. If you like what you’ve found on a blog (my blog maybe) click on this little box and it will allow you to leave a tip.

There is more to this ScratchBack than advertised. It is more a paid link ad service. It allows people to put a paid link on ones site as advertising for a given period of time. So, along with leaving a tip, you leave a short line of your best attention getting ad copy. Then you can give a little longer description that pops up as well as a link to your site or whatever you’re advertising. Brilliant.

I, since it is my site and all, can choose how long it stays. I can even approve or deny ads that I choose – if I felt they were inappropriate. I can choose if the “tips” stay up for any amount of time or they can be set to autobump. Autobump is the default setting and that is where as the slots fill up, the oldest is bumped off.

Ben, at BloggingExperience.com has his set up for $30 for 30 days. That’s great. I noticed that he only had 5 slots at first, but now that they are full, he’s expanded to 10 (you can expand up to 25). If I had $30 I would do it. Maybe next month I will.

I have mine set up (default) $1 set to autobump. I understand that these work best on sites with lots of traffic. Mine, not having a  of traffic – other than the StumbleUpon spike I had the other night – doesn’t have the greatest traffic. I only get about 10–30 visitors a day. It’s growing, but it’s not going to make me rich anytime soon.

I will keep you updated with how it goes. If you’ve got any suggestions, please feel free to leave them in my comments.
